The Party Wall Act 1996

The Act provides a straightforward way of dealing with neighbours when building work involves a party structure or excavation close to an adjoining building.

The Act has minimised disputes by requiring property owners to appoint a surveyor to agree the time and manner in which the work can be carried out, or to appoint an 'agreed surveyor' to act for both of them should problems arise.

A FAQ on the Act can be found on the RICS website, whilst the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister have produced this explanatory booklet
